Snoop Dogg at Mavericks

Words: Kristin Chambers  |  Photos: Kayleigh Bortolussi

Snoop may have been reincarnated into a lion, but his music remains true to doggy style.

Playing within the confines of Mavericks at The Jacksonville Landing during a busy Florida/Georgia weekend, Snoop proved to a packed house that at 41, he is still king. With hits like “Young, Wild & Free,” “Sensual Seduction” and “Drop it Like it’s Hot,” his set was just as much a sing-a-long as a dance party. Two sultry back-up dancers used chairs as props in choreographed moves, costume changing throughout the performance to match songs while a giant fake blunt was passed along the stage by his doggy-dogg mascot.

Donning a Rasta hat and trademark bling, Snoop satisfied fans with all of his hits as he slyly asked, “You guys feelin’ old school?” before going into “Gin and Juice” and “Nuthin’ But a ‘G’ Thang.” Some hands bounced with the beat in the air while others passed joints, creating a thick incense of pot-smoke throughout the room. Throwing in a touch of his reggae-awakened spirit, the Lion mixed a bit of the past with the future with a taste of his upcoming album, Reincarnated. Bow-wow to Jah-roar, it’s all good when the first name’s Snoop.
