Tim Mason

On His Way to Supersized EDM Stardom

Interview by Sarah Locke

Size Records artist, Tim Mason has a new single dropping soon and it’s sure to be another dance floor destroyer, just as both of his previous singles, “The Moment” and “Anima” have been.
When we spoke to Mason, he was in the middle of his Roll Call Tour, hitting cities such as Miami, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. He wouldn’t really give us any additional info on the forthcoming single, just that its official release is pretty much right around the corner.

“I can say it’s really soon, and that’s pretty much all I can say for right now.”
I suppose a little suspense never hurt anyone, right?

The Brighton-based artist started dabbling in music very early on and began DJing at the ripe age of 13, before moving on to the production side of things at 16- quite an impressive feat for such a young lad.

“It was an easy transition because I’ve been into music, like piano and everything, since I was really young, and it was something I wanted to do from a young age, but it was the dance music that inspired me. I started getting into clubs and I really wanted to do something with dance music, so then I got into Logic and it just went from there.”

His first hit single, “The Moment,” was released in the summer of 2011. Immediately following its release, Mason sent it to a certain someone- it was the only someone who he thought would be a good fit and potential supporter of his music and budding career. And guess what? That certain someone loved it and picked it up immediately.

And who would that be you ask. It was none other than Mr. Steve Angello of course, one-third of soon-to- disband (insert sobs here) EDM darlings, Swedish House Mafia and head of the insanely popular, Size Records imprint.

So let’s recap, shall we? The man only shopped the single to one label and that one label instantly picked it up; that’s pretty close to unheard of in any genre in the music industry, but nevertheless, it happened to the artist indeed.

“Size was the only label we really wanted to get because it was one of the major labels that inspired me to do what I do. It was the first place I wanted to put my hands in, and I didn’t know if it was going to happen or not, but the next thing I know, I’m shopping in Brighton and I got a call from a weird number, and I started talking to Steve and the rest is history as they say.”

Since then, Mason has played just about every large-scale club and festival around the globe, with performances at London’s Ministry of Sound and Ibiza’s Amnesia just to name a couple of his most credible he now has under his belt. Some of Mason’s producing influences include Steve Angello, Thomas Gold, Porter Robinson, and Tommy Trash, and he also tells me that if he could collaborate with anyone, it would be Coldplay’s Chris Martin.

Not surprisingly, Mason has the rest of this year and next already heavily booked. There will be no slowing down anytime in the near future for this newbie. He doesn’t mind though, as it’s what he came to do- work, produce, work, produce, and then work some more, all in hopes of making people move.

“There’s so much coming up,” Mason says. “We’re planning another tour for the beginning of next year and I’ve got a few shows in Europe, and then I’ve got a lot of studio work in December as well. The new single is coming out really soon too, so there’s a lot of things coming up and obviously a lot of shows.”

One of his favorite events is just around the corner as well- the Size Matters party at Washington D.C.’s Echostage on December 28th, featuring himself, Angello, and Third Party.

“Those events are just unbelievable,” Mason says. “They’re a very special thing for me.”
